Nowgong Girls' College is located in the centrally located district of Nagaon in the state of Assam. The district is on the south bank of the Brahmaputra River between latitudes 25°45' to 26°45' North and longitudes 91°50' to 93°20' East. It is bounded by Sonitpur district and the Brahmaputra River to the north, the districts of West Karbi Anglong and Hojai to the south, East Karbi Anglong and Golaghat districts to the east and the district of Morigaon to the west. Nagaon has become an educational hub owing to the presence of three NAAC accredited A-Grade colleges along with many other government and private institutes of excellence.
Located on the bank of River Kalong, the College covers an area of 4.3 acres of land and is located on latitude 26°21'24.97” North and longitude 92°41'9.53” East. It comprises of three multi-storied academic blocks, one administrative block, indoor stadium cum sports complex, walkers’ lane, one centrally air-conditioned auditorium, air conditioned digital conference hall, digital seminar hall, an alumnae-run cafeteria, two hostels, open air amphitheater, waste recycling facility, boundary wall with guard room and chowkidar’s quarter, a martyrs’ memorial, 24x7 CCTV surveillance, gymnasium, health center, and many other facilities for a healthy and conducive ambience in the campus.
The College is a premier institute of higher education for women in central Assam. It was founded on 12th September, 1962 and is affiliated to Gauhati University and is included in section 2(f) and 12B of UGC Act, 1956. The College is a regular recipient of UGC and state government grants. It has also been approved for RUSA grant from MHRD.
The College has undergone two cycles of NAAC accreditation, the first in 2004 and the second in 2015. It was accredited with B+ grade in the first cycle and with A grade in its second cycle.
The Institution made a modest beginning with 64 students and originally offered programmes only under the arts stream. Over the years, it has evolved into a premiere institution having 14 departments. In 2018, science stream was introduced on self-financing mode and the same was provincialized by the Government of Assam in the year 2020. At present, the College has 18 departments under both arts and science streams with a total enrollment of more than 2000 students. Four B. Voc courses proposed by the College were approved by the UGC under NSQF in 2020.
The college offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes under both science and arts streams and higher secondary (10+) programme only under arts stream. Post-graduate programmes in Assamese and Geography were introduced in 2014 and 2020 respectively. The College offers a number of certificate and diploma courses for the benefit of its students. It also has a recognized Study Center of the Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University.
The Mahesh Chandra Dev Goswami Central Library has rich collection of more than forty-five thousand volumes of text books, reference books, manuscripts, bound volumes etc. It has subscription of N-LIST and INFLIBNET. OPAC and remote access facilities are available for the users.
