Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University, established in December, 2006 is the first Institution of Higher Education of Open and distance learning mode throughout the North East. With the aim of building a knowledge based society, this University was established to provide quality higher education through open and distance learning. The very purpose of the university is to promote education; to reach the unreached and the moto of the university is ‘Education Beyond Barriers’; beyond the barrier of age, academic background and geographical boundaries.
Established under the provision of the Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University Act, 2005, this university started functioning from 11th December, 2006. The university has been recognized and the academic programmes have been approved by the Distance Education Council, New Delhi on October 3rd,2007 and University Grants Commission on March 18th , 2009. Government of Assam has recognized all Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programmes of the University for jobs and higher studies vide letter no. AHE/228/2007/330 dtd. May 8th, 2009.
With the view to help the learners from various parts of the state, the university has opened study centers in affiliated colleges and institutions of higher education. The Nowgong Girl’s College Study Centre of the KKHSOU came into existence with the signing of the MOU between University authority and College authority on 22nd December, 2007.

2. Objectives

The KKHSOU NGC study center has been working with the following objectives:-
a) To provide opportunity of higher education to a larger segment of the population including those who could not pursue higher education at the appropriate time for different reasons.
b) To provide access to higher education to large segments of population, particularly the disadvantaged groups such as those leaving in remote and rural areas including working people, housewives and other adults who wish to upgrade or acquire knowledge.
c) To contribute to the improvement of the educational system in the State by providing a non formal channel,
complementary to the formal system.
d) To provide counseling and guidance to the learners.
e) To provide Education & training to learners, raise their quality and improve their availability to the people with skills in arts and crafts.

• PGDCA (Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Application)
• PGDY (Post Graduate Diploma in Yoga)

4. Contribution Towards the Society

In its long journey this study center had contributed a lot in the field of distance education. Every year this center provided opportunity of higher education to hundreds of learners who could not complete education in formal mode. Many dropped out and deprived learners got themselves enrolled and fulfilled their aspiration of higher education. The study center also organized teacher training programmes (D.El.Ed) to the teachers deputed by the govt of Assam and those teachers have been working for the expansion of education in the state mostly in the remote areas. Passed out learners from this study center have been serving in different sectors of the state. Many women who were just house wives before their entry to this study Centre, now got the opportunity to obtain graduation, even master degree through this institution which contributed a lot towards gender equality. Moreover a good number of retired persons from govt job, already higher educated , are also studying of this Centre in order to fulfill their thirst of knowledge . And in this way this study Centre have been serving the purpose of ‘education beyond barriers’ beyond the barrier of age, academic background or geographical barriers.
