Profile

Botany is a multi-disciplinary subject which draws from many areas of science and technology to study plants and plant science. The subject originated as 'herbalism', the study and utilization of plants and their derivatives for their biological and medicinal properties. We live in a world where we are witnessing ever-increasing loss of our precious bio-resources. In this backdrop, studying Botany assumes significaneein order to equip ourselves to tackle issues like bio-piracy and habitat loss and to ensure conservation of our biodiversity. Fully equipped with necessary facilities of classroom and laboratories, the Department of Botany of NGC was established in the year 2018 with the introduction of the Science stream in the College during the same year. The Department is involved in organizing several seminars, workshops, field visits and co-curricular activities. The Department has established research linkages with the Nagaon Forest Division to document the floristic diversity of Kholahat Reserve Forest, which is one of the oldest reserve forests of Northeast India. The NGC Botany Department includes infrastructure such as dedicated classrooms, fully-equipped laboratories, preparation room, botanical garden and herbarium. The first issue of the Departmental Wall Magazine, 'Botanicum' was published on 7th February 2018 during the College Youth Festival celebration.
